Avoiding spelling mistakes

Adventure

The noun adventure refers to an unusual and exciting, often risky, experience. It is a common English language word. Many books in the collection of the Thammasat University Library have the word adventure in their titles.

They include 1861-1865: the adventure of the Civil War told with pictures; Action and adventure cinema; Action figures: men, action films, and contemporary adventure narratives; The adventure capitalist: camels, carpets and coffee : how face-to-face trade is the new economics; An adventure in applied science: a history of the International Rice Research Institute; Adventure in Bangkok; Adventure in space; An adventure in statistics: the reality enigma; and several others.

The word adventure is sometimes spelled wrong in Thai English as advanture. This may be because of the way that some people pronounce it in Thai English. It is not a good idea to spell an English word based on how we think it should be pronounced, since our pronunciation may not be standard English. Even if we speak perfect English without an accent, many English words are not spelled the way they sound. It is better to have a visual image of the word, based on its origins and meaning. The noun adventure derives from a Latin term referring to something about to happen. In English there is also a noun, advent. This refers to an important arrival of someone or something. In the Christian religion, Advent is a season spent waiting for the holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus at Christmas and also the return of Jesus to earth. If we invent a short sentence, it may help us remember the correct spelling:

We are planning an adventure at Advent.

A number of English words begin with the letters advent, related to the noun adventure:

adventurer

adventuresome

adventuress

Words in English beginning with the letters advent have to do with the word advantage:
