Avoiding spelling mistakes
Sentimental
The adjective sentimental means something that is caused by tenderness or sadness. If something is sentimental, it is emotional, sometimes overemotional, and affectionate. Several books in the Thammsat University Library collection have the adjective sentimental in their titles or subtitles.
They include An archaeology of sympathy: the sentimental mode in literature and cinema by James Chandler; Lahore: a sentimental journey by Pran Nevile; The naive and sentimental lover by John Le Carré; The sentimental education by Gustave Flaubert newly translated by Perdita Burlingame; Sentimental fabulations, contemporary Chinese films: attachment in the age of global visibility by Rey Chow; and Sentimental men: masculinity and the politics of affect in American culture edited by Mary Chapman and Glenn Hendler.
So we see that the adjective sentimental appears in different fields of study, including media, culture, literature, film, and others. Unfortunately, the adjective sentimental is sometimes spelled wrong in Thai English as sentimentall. To avoid this issue, it may help to think of the word’s origins. English words that end with the letters -al usually mean being of a kind or having the character of something. Something that is sentimental has to do with the sentiments, or feelings. If we remember that the word ending al is associated with the first part of the word, we will be less likely to choose the mistaken spelling with two final l’s. One way would be to associate the adjective sentimental in our minds with some of the most common examples of other words ending with the letters al:

Here are some usage examples to further familiarize us with the adjective sentimental:

- More sentimental market means less predictability of the baht… Yes, the trend can be predicted. But by how much and when remain the difficult questions. The reason for such difficulty is ironically simple. And if sentiment factors continue to determine the currency’s direction for the duration of this year, you may have to start consulting psychologists (and political scientists) instead of asking economists and analysts about where the baht is heading next. Our professions just aren’t trained for that.
