On Wednesday, 30 September 2020, the American Chemical Society (ACS) will present an ASEAN Virtual Event that may be of interest to Thammasat University students in several different faculties in addition to the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Thammasat University.

General suggestions and information about preparing academic research for possible publication will be offered. This advice may apply to many fields of science as well as the social sciences.

As the ACS website explains,

ACS on Campus, the American Chemical Society’s premier outreach program, will be hosting a virtual event geared towards our audience in ASEAN. This event will be in collaboration with local student chapters and divisions of ACS.

At this 2-hour virtual event, you’ll hear from ACS Editors and CAS specialists on their tips for publishing, preparing abstracts, and how SciFinder can help you in your research process!

All attendees will receive a participation certificate after the event.

For questions, contact us at acsoncampus@acs.org.

Among the presentations will be 10 Tips for Scholarly Publishing by Professor Habibah A. Wahab, Associate Editor of the Journal of Chemical Information & Modeling.

As its website notes,

The Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society. It was established in 1961 as the Journal of Chemical Documentation, renamed in 1975 to Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences, and obtained its current name in 2005. The journal covers the fields of chemical informatics and molecular modeling…

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a scientific society based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has nearly 157,000 members at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields. It is the world’s largest scientific society by membership.[3] The ACS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code. Its headquarters are located in Washington, D.C., and it has a large concentration of staff in Columbus, Ohio.

The ACS is a leading source of scientific information through its peer-reviewed scientific journals, national conferences, and the Chemical Abstracts Service. Its publications division produces over 60 scholarly journals including the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society, as well as the weekly trade magazine Chemical & Engineering News. The ACS holds national meetings twice a year covering the complete field of chemistry and also holds smaller conferences concentrating on specific chemical fields or geographic regions. The primary source of income of the ACS is the Chemical Abstracts Service, a provider of chemical databases worldwide.

The organization also publishes textbooks, administers several national chemistry awards, provides grants for scientific research, and supports various educational and outreach activities.

Dr. Wahab is Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University Sains Malaysia

The Thammasat University Library collection includes several books published by, or written as theses at, the University Sains Malaysia.

These include Decolonising the university: the emerging quest for non-eurocentric paradigms edited by Claude Alvares and Shad Saleem Faruqi; Rural development and rural institutions: a study of institutional changes in Java by Gunawan Wiradi; Thai-Malay relations: a study of traditional intra-regional relations from the 17th to the early 20th century by Kobkua Suwannathat-Pian; and Transforming research for sustainable community: PSU-USM International Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences 2011.

Last year, representatives of the Centre For Instructional Technology & Multimedia (PTPM@CITM) of University Sains Malaysia (USM) visited the Pridi Banomyong Library, Thammasat University.

The group was led by Associate Professor Wan Ahmad Jaafar Bin Wan Yahaya, Ph.D., Director of PTPM@CITM.

University Sains Malaysia (USM) is a public research university located in Penang, Malaysia. Its motto in English is We Lead. In June, USM will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its founding. It has over two thousand academic staff and more than 24,000 students. USM plans to open a Global Campus located at Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLCE). Thammasat University and USM are both participants in  the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) programme, to encourage student mobility in all Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) member countries.

According to its website, CITM@PTPM has four main functions:

To promote the use of instructional technology in teaching and learning in the University and country.

To provide the theoretical and practical experience for students at both undergraduate and graduate level on the research, design, development and use of educational media.

To provide the community with the expertise in the design and development of communications and multimedia programs.

To provide services to the university in terms of advising and giving appropriate information on the design & development of audio-visual and multimedia system and providing the technical specifications for the procurement of these equipment.

The mission of CITM@PTPM is

to promote research and development encompassing the domains of instructional technology to support innovative, effective, and meaningful applications of technology in teaching and learning.

Another presentation on 30 September will be The Art of Graphical Abstracts and Why They Matter by Professor Tao Deng, Associate Editor of Chemical Reviews.

Chemical Reviews is peer-reviewed scientific journal published twice per month by the American Chemical Society. It publishes review articles on all aspects of chemistry.

Professor Tao’s university homepage states:

Professor Tao Deng leads a research group in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also teaching classes related to Materials Properties, both at undergraduate and graduate level at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Biographical Information

Dr. Tao Deng is the Zhi Yuan Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1996, Dr. Deng graduated from Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China with a B.S. in Materials Chemistry.
