ดังเคยกล่าวไว้ในบทความก่อนหน้าว่า มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ให้ความสำคัญกับการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัย QS World University Ranking เป็นอันดับแรก ดังนั้น เราจึงควรมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยดังกล่าวบ้าง

QS World University Ranking เป็นการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยโดย Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd ประเทศสหราชอาณาจักร ต่อไปจะเรียกว่า QS

เดิม QS ร่วมกับ Thomson Reuters จัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยภายใต้ชื่อ Time Higher Education World University Ranking หรือ THE World University Ranking ต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 2010 (พ.ศ. 2553) QS ได้แยกออกมาจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยภายใต้ชื่อ QS World University Ranking

ปัจจุบัน QS แบ่งการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยออกเป็นหลายรายการ ที่น่าสนใจคือ
1. QS World University Rankings
2. QS World University Rankings by Faculty
3. QS World University Rankings by Subject
4. QS University Rankings: Asia

QS World University Rankings by Faculty แบ่งเป็น 5 กลุ่ม ดังนี้
1. กลุ่ม Arts & Humanities
2. กลุ่ม Engineering & Technology
3. กลุ่ม Life Sciences & Medicine
4. กลุ่ม Natural Sciences
5. กลุ่ม Social Sciences & Management.

การจัดอันดับแต่ละรายการ QS จะกำหนดตัวชี้วัดและค่าน้ำหนัก(%)ที่แตกต่างกัน โดยระบุไว้ในเว็บไซต์ของ  QS ผู้เกี่ยวข้องจึงควรตรวจสอบรายละเอียดเป็นระยะ เนื่องจากอาจมีการปรับตัวชี้วัดหรือคำจำกัดความของข้อมูลที่ QS ต้องการก็เป็นได้

ข้อสังเกตคือ ตัวชี้วัด Citations per Faculty และ Papers per Faculty จะนับจำนวนการอ้างอิงบทความ(Citation) จำนวนบทความวิจัย(Paper) เฉพาะข้อมูลจากฐานข้อมูลออนไลน์ Scopus เท่านั้น ดังนั้น หากบทความวิจัยของอาจารย์ไปตีพิมพ์ในฐานข้อมูลอื่นก็จะไม่ได้รับการนับเป็นผลงานของมหาวิทยาลัยในการจัดอันดับของ QS

ทั้งนี้ กองส่งเสริมมาตรฐานและประกันคุณภาพ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เป็นเจ้าภาพหลักในการรายงานข้อมูลของมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์เพื่อรับการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยจาก QS
