การประชุมเครือข่ายห้องสมุดในกลุ่มเอเชียแปซิฟิก ครั้งที่ 6 ( OCLC 6th Asia Pacific Regional Council 2014 Membership Conference) วันที่ 13 ตุลาคม 2557 ช่วงเช้าเป็นการบรรยายโดย Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President, OCLC Research and Chief strategist ซึ่งมาบรรยายในหัวข้อ “Understanding the Collective Collection: Towards a System-wide Perspective on Library Print Collections”
เนื้อหาของการบรรยายกล่าวถึงการสร้างความเข้าใจในทรัพยากรสารสนเทศแบบ Collective collection ของทรัพยากรสารสนเทศฉบับพิมพ์ผ่านมุมมองทั้งระบบ (ระบบในที่นี่คือภาพรวมทั้งหมดของ WorldCat) ในบทนำ Lorcan Dempsey กล่าวว่ายุคเครือข่ายได้สร้างความเปลี่ยนแปลงในความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง บุคคล ธุรกิจ และหน่วยงานต่างๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง ทำให้เราเห็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงของห้องสมุดในแง่การบริหารจัดการทรัพยากร สารสนเทศที่เปลี่ยนไปในด้านมุมมอง ขอบเขตและคุณค่า
แนวโน้มหนึ่งที่สำคัญคือห้องสมุดและหน่วยงานที่ให้บริการเหล่านี้มุ่งความ สนใจไปที่ องค์ประกอบของทรัพยากรสารสนเทศทั้งระบบ เราเห็นตัวอย่างนี้ในโลกดิจิทัลแล้ว นั่นก็คือ CLOCKSS หรือ Portio หรือ การรวมกันของ JSTOR และ HathiTrust หรือการรวบรวมเมทาดาทาจากทรัพยากรสารสนเทศดิจิทัลระหว่างองค์กรอย่าง Europeana, WorldCat, Digital Public Library of America

Connecting people to people, knowledge and country: ภารกิจของหอสมุดแห่งชาติสิงคโปร์
เมื่อวันที่ 13-14 ตุลาคม 2557 ที่ผ่านมา ผู้เขียนได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมการประชุม OCLC 2014 Asia Pacific Regional Council Membership Conference 6th ณ ประเทศสาธารณรัฐเกาหลี ก็เลยอยากจะเล่าสู่กันฟังถึงหนึ่งในหัวข้อของการประชุมในวันนั้น ซึ่งก็คือ หัวข้อการบรรยายของ Mr. Beh Chew, Leng ที่ปรึกษาหอสมุดแห่งชาติสิงคโปร์ เรื่อง Connecting people to people, knowledge and country
สิงคโปร์เป็นประเทศเล็กๆ ที่ไม่มีทรัพยากรทางธรรมชาติ แต่มีความมั่งคั่งทางเศรษฐกิจและสามารถพัฒนาประเทศได้อย่างรวดเร็ว ส่วนหนึ่งคงเป็นเพราะผู้คนมีระเบียบวินัย ใฝ่หาความรู้และพัฒนาตัวเองอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยรัฐบาลทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้สนับสนุนและส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้อย่างยั่งยืนให้กับประชากรของประเทศ
อีกหนึ่งหน่วยงานที่มีบทบาทสำคัญไม่แพ้กันในเรื่องของการพัฒนาและส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้อย่างยั่งยืนของประชาชน นั่นก็คือ หอสมุดแห่งชาติสิงคโปร์ ซึ่งอยู่ภายใต้การบริหารงานของคณะกรรมการห้องสมุดแห่งชาติสิงคโปร์ และภายใต้การบริหารของบอร์ดชุดเดียวกันนี้ ก็ยังมีห้องสมุดประชาชนอีกจำนวน 25 แห่ง และหอจดหมายเหตุแห่งชาติ
Mr. Beh Chew, Leng เริ่มต้นด้วยการตั้งคำถามกระตุกต่อมคิดของคนทำงานห้องสมุดว่า ถ้าพูดถึงห้องสมุดแล้วจะต้องนึกถึงหนังสือ นั่นคือสิ่งที่ถูกต้องแล้วหรือเปล่า? ไม่ล้าสมัยไปนะ?
